19th-century bronze with a brown patina
This is one of the greatest masterpieces of the great Houdon. Commissioned by Duke Ernest II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, this sculpture was executed by the artist in different versions between 1776 and 1790, one of which was purchased by Empress Catherine II of Russia. Very extensively commented upon in its time, the Diana was highly innovative in that it boldly appears in full nudity while hunting, rather than bathing.
Through the classical perfection of the pure beauty of her body and her face with noble and serious features, and through the Mannerist grace of the elongated forms and the swirling, aerial movement, this work was a great publishing success. Very high-quality casting. The arrow in the right hand is missing.
