"Battle Ax With Representation Of Charlemagne"
It is a 16th century style war ax, but made in the 19th century. The work is, however, pleasant, and the object remains pleasant, at a modest price. The head of the axe: it is decorated with fine arabesques on one side, and on the other we find in a medallion a representation of Charlemagne, Emperor of the West, holding the attributes of his power: in one hand the sword and in the other the crucigenus globe which represents the World. This representation of Emperor Karl der Grosse is quite uncommon on objects.
The head of the axe ends on the side opposite the cutting edge by a hook called "bec de corbin", curved, and decorated with plant motifs.
The handle protrudes from the head with a point in the shape of a fir tree, symbol of the continuity of life even in the conditions of symbolic winter. The rest of the handle is decorated with rolled up plants. Note two iron rivets which cross this handle, the use of which I do not know.
The Grip, which is attached to the rest of the weapon, has the same type of plant decorations. A rivet also crosses it
The handle ends with a button in which a ring was fixed, now missing
