Wassenaar was a student of Jan Toorop (1858-1928), symbolist painter and supporter of art nouveau. A member of the Vereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars de Brug in Amsterdam, he lived in Katwijk and often worked in today's Randstad. He opted for an artistic career at the age of 27, after a career as a worker in tulip fields and a police officer. Jan Troop, discovering the talent of this young painter, began to advise him and support him financially. In 1905, the painter presented his first exhibition at the Oldenzeel art hall in Rotterdam.
