CLODION (1738-1814) “Bacchantes” A beautiful group in gilded bronze. 19th century. Dimensions: 41 x 21 cm
Beautiful mythological sculpture in bronze with a golden patina. Clodion was born as Claude Michel in 1738, came from Nancy. He is part of a large line of sculptors from Lorraine from the early 18th century. He trained in Nancy, in Lille and then in Paris in his uncle's workshop. He also worked in the studio of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, a famous sculptor who notably created a statue depicting Voltaire naked, now kept in the Louvre. The young artist won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1759, studied at the royal school for protected students and decided to leave for the Italian capital in 1762. Clodion was above all an academic artist, trained at the greatest artistic institutions in France. His fame extends beyond borders. He will be especially noticed by Queen Catherine II of Russia.
