A souvenir of the Grand Tour
Iconography linked to the great men of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance was a popular theme for Italian artists in the 19th century. Mostly intended for the English and French, portraits in the imitation of cameos were intended to be taken to neighbouring countries as a souvenir of the trip to Italy. There is a whole production linked to this trip, such as small mosaics, marble busts and so on.
