Louis Boulanger was a noted and remarkable actor in the Romantic movement, an excellent colorist, in addition to his taste for ancient history painting in a troubadour spirit, he also devoted himself to mythological painting and genre scenes often inspired by literature.
A great admirer of Victor Hugo, he illustrated him extensively and made several portraits of the great man of letters and of his family. He also left a significant number of portraits of his contemporaries and friends including a famous Balzac kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Tours, a portrait of Achille Devéria at the Louvre Museum.
An exhibition was recently dedicated to him at the Maison de Victor Hugo in Paris from November 10, 2022 to February 25, 2023, Louis Boulanger, dream painter. This museum also preserves a good number of drawings, watercolors, sketches and portraits of Louis Boulanger.
He ended his life in Dijon where he was Director of the Imperial School of Fine Arts then, until his death, director of the Museum of Fine Arts.
