Small foot stool in gilded wood resting on four small arched legs topped with a pleated pattern. The crosspieces are molded and scrolled. In the center of one side, a foliage cartouche is carved. Louis These two patterns are particularly used by the carpenter Jean-Baptiste Tilliard. These elements, entirely representative of the work of this family (armchair sold at Sotheby's on November 28, 2016, under lot number 87), are also found in the work of the son, Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard. We find in particular a shepherdess stamped by the son, whose decorative sculptures are similar to those of our stool, and which also presents the same festoon of asparagus which escapes from the central cartouche (see Pierre Kjellebrg, “the furniture of the 18th century », Editions de l'amateur, Paris, 2008, p. Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard, who attained mastery in 1764, took over his father's workshops. He left behind a significant neoclassical production, but also created armchairs in a more refined Louis XV style. His clientele included ladies, daughters of Louis XV, and also supplied Gustave III, King of Sweden. The quality of our stool and the patterns we have cited lead us to compare it to the work of this famous carpenter.
