Gabriel Dauchot Gabriel Dauchot is a French painter and lithographist1 born on May 10, 1927 in Livry-Gargan and died on November 7, 2003 in Paris 10th. Nicknamed "the painter of the human comedy" he is associated with the figurative movement of Young Painting within the Paris School. Gabriel Dauchot was born on May 10, 1927 in Livry-Gargan. Supported by the encouragement of his father, an architect, and painting from the age of fourteen, Gabriel Dauchot, whose admiration goes to Maurice Utrillo and Chaïm Soutine, receives in 1940 the advice of Émile Othon Friesz and Yves Brayer at the Grande Chaumière Academy, then enters in 1942 at the National School of Fine Arts. He participated in Parisian salons from his youth and was not yet twenty years old when the Katia Granoff gallery, then the Cardo gallery, organized his first personal exhibitions. "The laureate is a man under thirty," observes Claude Roger-Marx, who does not fail to note "the atmosphere of disguise that is dear to him" as well as "the dull truculence that he gives to the opaque backgrounds where cold grays, greens, carmines and rudders sing with distinction" when in 1951 the prize of the Society of Collectors and art lovers was awarded to Gabriel Dauchot. His studio-apartment was located at No. 5 place Pigalle in Paris Critical reception "Dauchot is the painter of nostalgia. He would have wanted to live between 1850 and 1900 and the characters he represents usually wear outdated costumes. He paints sad harlequins, overwhelmed birdmen, street violinists, snow landscapes, still lifes and funerals. But, if he expresses nostalgia by the choice of his subjects, he also expresses it by his technique. He never uses pure colors. His manner evokes Soutine by the importance of the effects of matter, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec by the layout. » — Yvon Taillandier "Very quickly, despite his youth, he knew how to impose himself in paintings that expressed the moods of an old-fashioned society, strange while remaining painting. In his recent Parisian exhibition, he was able to make cheerful, generous, spiritual canvases with an empty hearse and an armchair from another era ..." — Rene Barotte "Today he is one of the greatest artists in Paris, in the tradition of an Utrillo, a Marquet or a Dufy. He invites us for a nostalgic walk in a timeless Paris, that of small trades, mechanics and grisettes, attic rooms and bistros, this funny Paris that amuses and tenderizes him and that he restores to us in his own way. »… - Jacques Chirac, Gabriel Dauchot Retrospective, [catalog], Lanobre, château de Val, summer 1992. "[...] The flavor of a tragicomic reality told in this truculent expressionism, tinged with black humor, which was unanimously praised by critics in the post-war years. » - Gérald Schurr, The Bargus of Painting, The Editions of the Amateur, 1993, p.302. "Dauchot is fond, apart from still lifes and landscapes, of these anonymous, melancholic, dreamy beings, coffee boys, married people who mingle with characters directly from a world of acrobats: pierrots, harlequins [...] This "merchant of wonders"; as René Domergue calls him, he also knows how to tinge with black humor some of these scenes, especially his funerals. » — Lydia Harambourg Awards and distinctions Prize of the Society of Amateurs and Collectors, 1951.
