"Large Original French Gunpowder Horn, Naval - French, End Of The 18th Century"
Large in size, used to load cannons on board ships. With fitted wooden cap and brass tip for dispensing. The French naval gunner's powder horn was used to prime cannons with finely ground gunpowder. A central screw cap, removable for powder refilling, is located in the wooden cap. At the narrower end, a 7.5cm brass tip fitted with a spring-loaded locking device ensures the powder is held securely. Two brass rings on the horn provide attachment points for a shoulder strap. This specific design was used by the French Navy in the late 1700s and saw extensive use during naval conflicts against the British, including the Battle of Aboukir in 1798, Copenhagen in 1801, and Trafalgar in 1805. good condition for its age - Some wormholes and signs of wear and age.
