"Since the Middle Ages, three hamlets of Castandet, near Mont-de-Marsan, have devoted themselves to pottery in order to exploit the clays and marls of land not very suitable for cultivation. Unlike other sites, the pottery center de Castandet does not specialize in the production of a particular type of object. Dishes and utensils intended for the preparation, cooking or conservation of food or water, and articles of terracotta are made from terracotta. house necessary for hygiene or lighting and tools for agricultural or artisanal work. This proto-industry encompassing an entire community occupies the peasants part of the year, the rest being dedicated to work in the fields or the vineyard. — some manage to make a living exclusively from pottery. The commercial peak of Castandet pottery took place in the 18th century, with around sixty workshops. These productions were sold at markets and fairs throughout the Landes and beyond; their use is attested in a large part of Gascony. Competition from earthenware and then other cheaper regional productions then affected the village's activity. The social situation of potters deteriorated in the 19th century. The emergence of new metallic or plastic materials is overcoming utility ceramics. Potters survived by making resin pots for gemstones and artistic works until the middle of the 20th century, marking the total decline of the center of Castandet. After a time of forgetting, the history of this local craft was rediscovered and studied from the 1980s." (source Wikipedia).
