Object description :

"Emile Renouf (1845-1894) "lookouts On The North Pier Of Le Havre 19th" Marine, Honfleur, Pozier"
SUPERB and RARE oil/canvas mounted on cardboard by Emile Renouf representing characters including two lookouts on the north pier of Le Havre, circa 1885/1890, unsigned, authenticated on the back "I guarantee this painting as being a work by E. Renouf, G. Maury August 2, 1921" Format of the painting alone 53x43cm or 63x53cm frame included It is therefore a magnificent composition by the famous Le Havre painter who paints here one of his favorite subjects, a subject which will earn him all the honors . Indeed we find in his work several motifs in this spirit, this oil is surely a study for a large format, the painter will create very large ones. Because I found 2 almost identical works, a first painting titled The Watchers, where we can see some slight variations, in particular one of the two characters is holding a telescope (see last photo) as well as an engraving which is also extremely close. Emile Renouf is one of the best marine painters of the 19th century, his works are quite rare and his price is very high and international, we even note a result of more than €800,000 for a very large format. Émile Renouf is a French painter, born June 23, 1845 in Paris and died May 4, 1894 in Le Havre. He studied at the Lycée Imperial Bonaparte and had as a friend Jacinthe Pozier, who also became a painter. The Pozier family will subsequently be of great help and unwavering friendship to him. After classical studies, he entered the Académie Julian and was a student of Gustave Boulanger, Jules Lefebvre and Charles Duran. Passionate about classical music, admirer of Beethoven, Gluck and Mozart, he goes with his friends almost every Sunday to applaud the works at the Pasdeloup concerts. He exhibited his first works at the Paris Salon of Painting and Sculpture between 1877 and 1881. He received the gold medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He painted marine and peasant themes, often Breton, particularly after a stay on the Île de Sein. His Parisian workshop being in a terrible state, he had a new workshop built in Le Havre where he died. His works can be found in museums in France in Amiens, Le Havre, Rouen, Liège and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A four mast even bears his name, built in 1897. He is buried in the Sainte-Marie cemetery in Le Havre. This painting on canvas mounted a long time ago on cardboard is in very good condition, just tiny scratches and very slight missing at the bottom left, that's all. Delivered in an antique gold frame. Work guaranteed 200% authentic.
