19th century Russian rectangular box in black lacquered papier-mâché, the lid opening with a hinge and inlaid with an octagonal plaque enameled on copper depicting fishermen, the interior in imitation of tortoiseshell. Slight wear on the corners. Loukoutin Manufacture (Piotr Vassilevitch Loukoutin, 1784 - 1864) Alexander II period, circa 1841-1855. h. 4xl. 9.3 x p. 6.4 cm.
Since the 19th century, a very particular and unique folk art has developed and prospered in Russia, according to a tradition that is still alive today. The art of miniatures on lacquer, on papier-mâché supports, certainly constitutes one of the most appreciated expressions of Russian decorative art by both Russians and foreigners.
