The cat in Ancient Egypt
Divinised, the cat represents the goddess Bastet, gentle and kind, disciplined after the anger of the god. Having appeased the lioness, she became a graceful, feline cat.
Thousands of effigies were found in the pits of her sanctuary, deposited as ex-voto offerings by devotees seeking her blessings. According to some scholars, the cat came to Europe from Egypt, and our authentic alley cats are in fact Egyptian by heredity.
