This is a very large wind-up cylinder music box. Impressive 51 cm long cylinder with a diameter of approximately 11.5 cm (that's right!! 11.5 cm!!) and therefore the largest cylinder music box on the market today. The mechanism has a large spring motor and plays 24 melodies at 3 per revolution (one revolution of the cylinder takes approximately 3 minutes).
The polished brass base plate is numbered and signed “Humbert Brolliet à Geneva”. On the left is a melody indicator. The mechanism is fixed by 3 screws at the front and 3 screws at the rear of the case.
he case is of exceptional quality, with rosewood in all places and stringing on the front, left and right, as well as inside the lid. The upper part of the lid has exceptional marquetry, with engraved brass and mother-of-pearl. Even the sides of the lid are inlaid with two brass threads...
This music box is illustrated in “The music box a guide for collectors” by Ord-Hume on page 123 and on page 288 of the same book we can read : ” ... As a maker of music boxes, the name Humbert Brolliet is associated with objects demonstrating exceptional dexterity... “, and “ ...All Humbert boxes of all name combinations viewed up to now have circular or bun-shaped feet and diamond-shaped fillet marquetry on the front of the box and inside the lid, while the lids have brass marquetry. »
This box belonged to a certain Mr. Lubbock (England) in the 1960s and he commissioned a restoration from Baud Frères in Switzerland. In the 1970s, a Mr. Atkinson described on the inside of the melody indicator cover how to set the melody to the correct melody.
