Guanyin statue in Chinese porcelain, mounted on a gilded bronze base. China, late 19th, early 20th century. Considered in the West as the goddess of Mercy, Guan Yin is a Buddhist deity, symbolizing the unlimited compassion of the bodhisattva for all beings - human and non-human. She is most often depicted draped in a long white dress which covers her from head to toe; wearing a bun; her skin is as white as milk. In meditation, she rests on Lotus leaves. Our statue is mounted on a gilded bronze base which was pierced to make it into a lamp. Today it is a central piece to place on a piece of furniture, to complete an 18th or 19th century decor evoking Chinoiserie or Chinese cabinets.
