Domenico Angelo Malevolti Tremamondo (1716-1802) known as "Angelo" settled in England in the 1750s. Considered by many to be the greatest fencing master of the 18th century, Angelo was an instructor at the court of princes, of the Duke of Gloucester and Henry Federic, to whom the book is dedicated. The work, among the most influential in England after Vincentio Savolo's treatise on the subject, also had a great impact on the continent and was included in Diderot's Encyclopedia under the title "Escrime".
