Rare bronze plaquette representing Tiberius, second Roman emperor.
Italy, 17th century.
Belonged to a series of the twelve Caesars. If certain series of emperor plaquettes have been widely distributed, this one is a priori only known from the complete series kept in Ferrara (see last photo). The inscription differs, but it was probably cold chiseled after casting, thus giving rise to variations.
Engraved "TI . CÆS" under the bust. Very good quality cast, beautiful brown patina with some traces of verdigris.
