"Behold, I will send an angel (messenger) before Him (Christ)!"
His life is described by the evangelists in the New Testament: Matt. 3: 1-17, Mark 1: 1-9, Luke 1: 5-25.
According to the Bible, John was beheaded under Herod around 30 years after Christ.
Iconography:
In Eastern iconography, John, when depicted alone, is almost always seen with wings. The wings are meant to indicate the angelic nature of his life. The Baptist of the Lord is still depicted as an ascetic. His beard is disheveled, his long hair falls to his shoulders.
He is dressed in a fur garment made of camel hair (Matthew 3:4) and thus represents the prototype of the Christian anchorite and preacher of repentance.
The depiction of the Christ Child in the chalice is a symbol of the baptism of the Son of God.
In his left hand the saint holds a scroll with the inscription: "This is the Lamb of God who takes upon himself the sins of the world."
