Object description :

"Joseph Garibaldi (1863-1941) Old Mill In Provence"
Joseph Garibaldi or the Peaceful South. This is the title of Pierre Murat's work dedicated to the artist. A great specialist in bucolic life in Provence in the 19th century, the artist had no equal when it came to painting simple, unadorned subjects with humility and tenderness. Thus he puts the spotlight on old buildings, as in this painting, an old shed, the remains of a mill, at the bottom a well, some old stones and the charm operates. The painter holds our attention and brings back to life what we thought was dead, the imagination taking over, this is how a simple painting transmits a message to us, that of the simplicity and harshness of the life of the people of the earth of this time. The work is presented in a gilded Louis XIV style frame which measures 48 cm by 56 cm and 27 cm by 35 cm for the canvas alone. In good condition, only a few cracks from use, it is signed lower right.

Joseph Garibaldi exhibited at the Salon des artistes from 1884 to 1914 where he obtained an honorable mention in 1887 and a second class medal in 1897. These are mainly views of famous sites and monuments, coastal ports: Cassis, where he regularly paints between 1884 and 1899, La Ciotat, where he was welcomed by Antoine Lumière, Bandol, Sanary and Toulon. But its specialty will remain the Old Port of Marseille. Until 1905, he benefited from the patronage of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905) who, guided by the critic Paul Leroy, very supportive of Vollon's students, bought his paintings and donated them to provincial museums. He exhibited his landscapes at the Marseille Colonial Exhibition in 1906 and obtained a travel grant for Tunisia in 1907. For the rest of his career he was supported by his friends from the Association of Marseille Artists (Étienne Martin, José Silbert and Édouard Crémieux), successively at the head of the association...
