Blessing Christ
Oil on panel, cm 86 x 72
Frame, cm 114 x 100

The work depicts Christ half-bust, dressed in a red tunic, color symbol of royalty, surmounted by a blue cloak. With his left hand he holds the crucigero globe, while his right hand is raised in a blessing gesture. The background is an unreal atmosphere, dominated by a golden light, even more luminous in correspondence with the nimbus that surrounds the head of Christ, Which is surrounded by a host of cherubim and a crown of clouds. It is the background element to bring back to mind typical solutions Emilian, already consolidated in the sixteenth century.
The iconography makes particular reference to the sacrifice of Christ for the salvation of all. The attribute of the globe denounces, in fact, the extension Urbi et orbi of the divine blessing, declared in the present painted by Christ himself through the gesture of his right hand, sacred par excellence. The codification of the attribute-globe dates back to the pagan figuration of the Roman emperor carved in bas relief or minted by the mint of the state bearing the globe of victory, explicit reference to its military achievements. In the development of a modern iconography that would be consistent with solid figurative references, on the one hand on the other hand, Jews, the first Christian artists accepted the meaning of the globe held by the emperor to attribute it to Christ, true and last emperor, reigning in the earthly and the otherworldly worlds.
In the present painting a double source of light lights up the figure of Jesus, one coming from the nimbus, illuminating with delicacy the background made of clouds and cherubs, the other by Christ himself, illuminating the red dress worn. The crepitanti folds of the blue mantle placed on the right shoulder move the portrait. Particular attention is paid to the characterization of the face, framed by long hair finely illuminated by golden light, and a thick beard also described minutely.
