School of Andrea del Sarto (Florence, 1486 - Florence, 1530)
San Giovannino
Oil on panel, cm 57 x 39
With frame, cm 67 x 49

The table depicts San Giovannino, recognizable by the stick and the red cloak that slips on a shoulder. The subject stands out in full-length against a dark background, just cut by the sunset that reveals a mountain landscape. The Saint, still a child, is caught with his body in profile while the head is rotated towards the viewer to seek attention. The left arm is extended and grasps the stick well pointed to the ground and, in a kind of chastic correspondence, the right foot is brought forward from the other, as if the Saint had been interrupted in his path.
The subject takes up the features of the Jesus child in the table of Andrea del Sarto Madonna with Child and San Giovannino from the Wallace Collection of London, by varying only the position of the lower limbs.
Even the pictorial mixture - here dominated by dark and contrasting colors unlike the London table played on brighter colors - refers to the tailoring, especially in the particular gradient effect, stylistic figure of the master.
Nicknamed by Vasari the "without errors", Andrea d'Agnolo of Francesco di Luca di Paolo del Migliore Vannucchi (Florence, 1486 - Florence, 1530), was master of the entire first generation of "eccentric" (Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino in primis), but unlike the students renewed the traditional repertoire in a polite manner, through the accentuation of the monumental breath of the figures, the variation of the chromatic and technical.
The London Table, as well as other Madonnas with child by Andrea del Sarto, has been variously reproduced by other artists in his circle, but also by Domenico Puligo artist student of Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio but heavily indebted to the inventions of del Sarto.
Therefore, it is reasonable to argue that the author of this work is an artist linked to the school of Andrea del Sarto.
