Marie-Thérèse-Louise de Savoie-Carignan, known as Mademoiselle de Carignan or also Madame de Lamballe, was born at the Carignan palace on September 8, 1749 and died on September 3, 1792 in Paris. Princess of the House of Savoy, she became Princess of Lamballe through her union with Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, son of Louis-Jean-Marie de Bourbon, grandson of Louis XIV. Married in 1767, she was widowed the following year, aged eighteen. Having become friends with the future Queen Marie-Antoinette, then dauphine, she was appointed superintendent of the Queen's Household. Supplanted by Gabrielle de Polignac in the affection of the sovereign, she will still remain devoted to Marie-Antoinette who became Queen of France, for which she will pay with her life. Having then followed the royal family after the day of August 10, 1792, she was incarcerated shortly after in La Force prison.
