The present couple of watercolors depicting the one view of the Doge’s Palace with the background of the entrance to the Grand Canal and the promenade of the Schiavoni' and the other 'View of the Grand Canal are to be attributed to the Venetian painter Umberto Ongania( Venice 1867 - 1942). The eldest son of Ferdinando Ongania, a Venetian publisher, prefers to portray glimpses of his hometown, using both watercolors and oils.. His drawing of the Porta della Carta appeared at the National Exhibition in Venice in 1887 and in 1888 in Bologna, Il Palazzo Ducale di Venezia. He continued to paint until the early decades of the 20th century. Among the works in collaboration with his father Ferdinando was that for the monumental volume dedicated to the Basilica, with text by Camillo Boito, where Umberto was one of many illustrators. 
Artist of small-sized paintings detailed and of a certain finesse, he was considered in 1934 by Agostino Mario Comanducci (author of the most famous dictionary of Italian painting) worthy of mention, also to remember his skill not only in oil paintings, for other rare, and watercolors, but also in the drawings to smoke "demonstrating particular expertise in this kind of activity."
