"Ten Besançon Tarot Playing Cards By J. Jerger, Early 19th Century 19th "
Ten playing cards from the Besançon Tarot, enhanced stencil engravings. Eight cards are marked "FRANCE J JERGER" stamped in ink. King of Lepee, Reyne of Lepee, The Sun, Jack of Deniers, La Force, Juno, Cavalier Cutouts, The King of Deniers, VII Wand and II Sword. This game dates from the very beginning of the 19th century. Dimensions of a card: height 12.2 cm - width 6.5 cm. Good general condition, a small hole visible on a card. The so-called “Besançon” tarot is a variant of the Marseille tarot, probably born in Strasbourg at the beginning of the 18th century and where two cards, the High Priestess (asset II) and the Pope (asset V), are replaced - in general - by Juno and Jupiter. Perhaps these two cards were considered blasphemous or they wanted to erase the reference to the papacy. Originally from Strasbourg, the typical Besançon Tarot is the Tarot of Jean Jerger (1800-1825).
