Still life with grapes and watermelon and carpet
Oil on canvas, cm 72 x 99
The elegant still life in question presents an orderly fruit feast accompanied by an elaborate Persian carpet and musical instruments. In a multi-layered composition, you can recognize juicy figs, grape shoots and bunches, a pomegranate and finally lemons.
The painting executed in the early nineteenth century is for ways and composition debtor of the ways of the painter Maximilian Pfeiler.
The life of Maximilian Pfeiler is not well documented and there are few chronological references about his activity. The few sources that exist indicate that in 1683 he was a member of the Guild of Painters of Prague, his hometown, and a student of Christian Berentz (1658-1722), a painter of German origin who first travelled to the Netherlands and then settled in Rome, introducing in Italy themes from northern Europe such as the still life in which he specialized.
It is not clear whether the alunnato of Pfeiler near Berentz already takes place in Rome, where the Czech artist has certainly been active since 1694 intessendo collaborations with Francesco Trevisani and Michele Rocca. Pfeiler thus manages to carve out a leading role in the Roman art scene of the late 17th - early 18th century, creating extravagant and recognizable compositions of fruits and flowers very appreciated by illustrious men: for example some of his works were part of the collection of Cardinal Fesch.
