Couple of still life with floral bouquet
(2) Oil on canvas, cm 33.5 x 25
Frame cm 43 x 35.5

The gentle composure of these floral compositions is enhanced by the subtle brush touch that sharpens the individual painted petals. A transparent thread similar to satin wraps the stems of flowers, accorpandoli in joyful bouquet. A double quality of carnations, red and red mottled on the white exterior, is associated with powder-coloured roses and blossoming corollas of lilies. In one painting, a delicate row of lily of the valley falls on the pendant of a chrysanthemum, serving as a frame for an anemone, while in the other one can see gerberas and burning rosolacci. The bright detachment of the flowers, specified by the neutral background, allows to light up the paintings of a silent absoluteness, enhanced by the serene choice to present them deprived of containers.
The paintings are comparable to the production of the Tuscan school of the XVIII century when, in the field of naturism, there was still a lesson by Bartolomeo Bimbi (1648-1730), especially as regards its production at the turn of the eighteenth century. The Medici family encouraged, since the early seventeenth century, the course of this pictorial genre, commissioning multiple compositions to be destined to the mansions and family palaces. A substantial demand began under the Grand Duke Ferdinand II (1610-1670), his brother cardinal Leopold (1617-1675) and John Charles (1611-1663), another cardinal, which was soon followed by the passion for naturamorphism of Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723), who inaugurated a flourishing season. The figure of Pier Antonio Micheli (1679-1737), who was named prefect of the Botanical Garden and one of the founders of the Florentine Botanical Society, was a significant example.
The present nature is traced, by choice of composition and by treatment of materials, the painting with flower pot today in private collection Mantua, executed by an anonymous Florentine XVII century. The figurative updates characteristic of the following century, as they appear in the present relatively limited but ordered choice of pieces of the bouquet and a more sentimental colorism, They are found in the Still Life today at the Medici Villa of Poggio a Caiano, the work of another Tuscan artist, offering similar patches of brush strokes. An illustrious model for this turn is recognizable in the pair of Nature with hyacinths and anemones made by Bimbi, today in the mentioned collections of Poggio a Caiano, It once belonged to the Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici.
