Jacques-Raymond BRASCASSAT (Bordeaux 1804 – 1867 Paris), attributed to Italianate landscape with walkers Oil on canvas, 38 x 47 cm THE ARTIST Brascassat began his artistic career in Bordeaux, under the direction of Théodore Richard and obtained a first prize for drawing in the competition of the school of the same city in 1822. In 1824 he came to Paris and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where his master was Hersent. Although he only obtained a second prize in 1825 in the competition for Rome – the first prize had been awarded to André Giroux – the newspapers of Paris and especially those of Bordeaux led such a vigorous campaign on this subject that, by special favor of King Charles X, a pension was granted to him to enable him to complete his studies in Italy. Returning to France, he searched for his way for a while, producing landscapes and historical scenes in turn. In 1846 he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts
