The plastic quality of alabaster, a preferred material for the restitution of soft-modelled transparencies, has guaranteed its fame in the art field over the centuries. Rock made up of sediments of evaporated mineral salts, alabaster is made up of a fabric of aggregate mineral concretions, They are dug out in the form of eggs, which are then shaped and carved as desired. 
In this work the artist has organized a subtle vertical composition, in which he depicts an animal scene with strong veracity. A dove is feeding its chicks, while a snake approaches between the frills, threatening the nest. 
Etymologically alabaster meant, in both Greek and Latin, "vessel" or more generically a container made of this material, The first examples were containers. The oldest vases were made in the land of the pharaohs, and since then the extraordinary beauty of this material has consecrated its use to artistic work.
