To find out more:
Marcel-Beronneau studied with Gustave Moreau and Eugène Thirion at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1895 to 1934.
A recognised painter, he took on several public commissions, including Salomé dansant devant le roi Hérode for the Manufacture des Gobelins. He also decorated the La Pérouse restaurant in Paris and the Ajaccio casino.
Marcel-Beronneau remained very close to Gustave Moreau throughout his career, who considered him one of his best pupils.
Like Moreau, Marcel-Beronneau drew his inspiration from academic principles, and his work included a whole range of symbolism.
Our drawing can be compared with the study for Jacob and the Angel by Moreau, now in the Musée Gustave Moreau in Paris.
