Ercole De Maria (San Giovanni in Persiceto, ? - 1640 ca), attr.
San Paolo
Oil on copper, cm 18 x 14
With Tuscany frame Louis XV in carved wood, cm 39 x 28

The work under consideration, a superb example of oil on oval copper depicting Saint Paul, recognizable by the sword attribute, is attributable to the hand of the artist from Emilia Ercole De Maria.
Little information remains of the life of this painter from San Giovanni in Persiceto (Bologna), son of Guido, and then called Ercolino di Guido, Ercolino Bolognese or Ercolino de Castel San Giovanni, industrious in the fourth/fifth decade of the seventeenth century.
The main source for his biography is Carlo Cesare Malvasia, who briefly describes him in Felsina pittrice (1678), an appendix to the life of Francesco Gessi, whose school he attended. Here he is celebrated for his excellent skills as a copyist of the works of the Bolognese maestro and collaborator Guido Reni, so much that it is said about him: "[... ] copied well then the things of the latter (Guido Reni) so that none of that great school from those of the master distinguish them talor sapea [...]".
It can be assumed that the entry of De Maria in the workshop of Reni occurred before 1630, since in 1635 he enjoyed the confidence of the master, who assigned him the task of transporting St. Michael the Archangel to the Capuchin Church in Rome "and, if necessary, where he had the trouble of being retouchable" (Malvasia [1678], 1841, p.). During his stay in Rome he painted two small frescoes in the Sistine Chapel of Santa Maria Maggiore, made copies of paintings by Reni for the Barberini and the pontiff, and had, from Urban VIII, the commission to paint one of St. Peter’s canvases. Before returning to Bologna he was also awarded the "Cavaliere di N. S.". Among the works of the master he saw and with which he tried to be, we can mention for example the Annunciation of the Pinacoteca Civica in Ascoli Piceno, now preserved in the Church of San Giovanni in Monte in Bologna.
