The Betrothed Couple's Ball
oil on canvas, cm. 68x52
within a frame for a total of cm. 79x63
The painting depicts a classic scene of eighteenth-century Venice, the golden age of the great painters - first and foremost the members of the Longhi family - who managed to represent the most characteristic scenes of family life of the noble families of the lagoon city.
The scene, set inside a noble palace, depicts a young couple in love intent on dancing with, behind them, a violinist who accompanies them with his notes. On the right side, sitting on an armchair and depicted from the side, I find an older lady, certainly the girl's mother, careful to check that everything is done correctly and in line with the principles of the time.
On the back an old writing in cursive reports the words: "Pietro Longhi".
The painting can certainly be traced back to the hand of a skilled Venetian master active towards the end of the 18th century. A painter who certainly had the opportunity to train on the works of Pietro Longhi and from whom he learned the taste for the realistic representation of Venetian interiors and scenes of life, the attention to detail and the skillful use of the chromatic palette with the predominant use of brown colors.
The painting is in good condition with some slightly worn points.
