"Luer Cheek Retractor, Circa 1861"
Very rare "cheek retractor" based on the model invented by Luer around 1860-1861. Our model is made of wood and is not signed. Was this a demonstration model or were all the spreaders made of wood? We were unable to find any other copies. According to publications of the time, the cheek retractor was intended to “facilitate the exploration of the internal part of the cheeks and the mouth”. This instrument which seems not to have had great success was to be used in dentistry, stomatology and ENT. Despite a small accident/lack of material on the gutter or groove, good condition. The instrument is mounted on a later but old base. It measures 16.5cm in length.
