Coastal view
Oil on canvas, cm 20 x 28

The canvas examined portrays a glimpse of coastal life. The fishermen, in the low tide in the foreground, are engaged in various activities, while the boats are dry, stranded on a sandbank. The beauty of the landscape, the coastal subject and the attention to atmospheric data and reality refer to the typical painting of Achille Dovera (1838-1895). Milanese painter, trained at the Brera Academy, where he was a student of Hayez, had at the beginning of his career a partial predilection for subjects of historical and Risorgimento. He then turned his attention to landscape painting, becoming an esteemed and recognized interpreter. The painting here examined fits perfectly into the repertoire of works that the artist exhibited at his period exhibitions: landscapes, marine life and views both Italian and foreign. The available monographic material shows that Dovera was present in France as early as 1865; he painted scenes of Normandy regularly from 1871 to 1895. The scene, probably set on the north coast of France, fits well with what has been said above and allows to hypothesize the realization in this time context. The artist participated with continuity in the various exhibitions, as the Promoter of Genoa or the National Exhibition of Naples, or the events of Milan, Turin and Venice.
The colour choices are based on the tones of blue and pink, as typical among his works, which intertwine in the sky illuminated by the light of dawn and on the surface of the sea, where the sky and surrounding coasts are reflected.
