Beautiful and large work by the painter Léon Joubert which represents a view of the Philippe le Bel Tower in Villeneuve lès Avignon from the island of Barthelasse. We can distinguish in particular the two emblematic monuments of the city: the Tour Philippe Le Bel and Fort Saint-André.
The artist perfectly represented the autumnal play of light in the vegetation of Barthelasse Island and on the Philippe Le Bel Tower.

A student of Léon Germain Pelouse and Fernand Cormon, Léon Joubert exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français from 1876 to 1927. In 1883, he exhibited landscapes at the Art Association of Montreal (Canada) and at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts preserves from the artist a view of the surroundings of Rochefort.
He enjoys painting views of towns and villages along rivers. It is linked to the Barbizon School.

In 1895, 1904, 1905, 1908 and 1909, Léon Joubert exhibited views of Avignon and Villeneuve les Avignon at the Salon des artistes. Our painting is perhaps one of the works presented at the Salon by the artist.

Dimensions: 65 x 100 cm without frame and 79.5 x 114.5 cm with its original gilded wood frame.
