Rare pair of richly decorated Empire candlesticks with butterflies executed in mercury gilded bronze. The candle holders are in the shape of a baluster vase with scale and flower motifs. They rest on a capital decorated with wicker-work and flowers, while the tapered shaft is adorned with an intricate pattern of stars, spiraling down to the lower part which is decorated with lotus leafs and flowers. On the circular base we can distinguish butterflies and baskets with flower garlands. Butterflies are considered a symbol for transformation, rebirth and happiness.
This pair is in an excellent state of preservation with their original mercury gilding.
Origin: Paris circa 1810.
Height 32.5 cm,diameter of the base: 14.5 cm.
