Son of Hermes and Aphrodite , "Hermaphrodite" is a handsome teenager who inherited the beauty of both his parents .
While he was bathing in Lake Caria , the naiad Salmacis fell in love with him and tried to kiss him .
As he rejects her advances , she forcefully hugs him and drags him to the bottom of the lake .
When he emerges from the water , "Hermaphrodite" realizes that the gods have granted the naiad's wish and that he is endowed with feminine attributes .
He then implores his parents to curse the place : any man bathing in this lake will experience the same fate .
This bronze , discovered in 1831 , is characterized by the very elegant movement of the shoulders and thorax close to a dance movement .
