Charles Girardier (1759–1839), also known as Girardier l'Aîné ("Girardier the Elder"), was a Geneva master watchmaker of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
He was known for his combination of extensive expertise in watch movements, traditional arts and crafts (enameling, miniature painting), and automaton-style dial animations.
In 1792, he won a prize from the Société des Arts de Genève for one of his watches.
In 1809 he received the title of Master Watchmaker .
In 1810, his masterpieces were recognized by the Société des Arts de Genève.
Without descendants, his name fell into oblivion upon his death in 1839.
It was not until Patrick A. Ulm, a great collector of old clocks, “met” the watchmaker during a visit to a museum that the flame was rekindled. A pocket watch with an animation of a hunting scene arouses in him the desire to resurrect the name of Charles Girardier.
In 2018, Patrick A. Ulm relaunched the Charles Girardier brand and enjoyed immediate success, winning the GPHG Ladies' Complication prize in 2020 with his Tourbillon Signature Mystérieuse.
