It dates from the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868).
The “Lotus Sutra” is one of the founding texts of Buddhism.
The "Lotus Sutra" occupies the center of the composition, here represented in the form of a cartouche in which is inscribed "Homage to the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law".
This cartouche is surrounded by two Buddhas, one and the other joining their two hands in a gesture of homage ("gasshoîn") to the Wonderful Law. They are seated on a lotus flower shaped base in front of a stylized mandorla. The whole rests on a platform decorated with Fô dogs and on a rectangular base decorated with budhist "wheels of the law".
Of great finesse, this entire sculpture is richly carved, lacquered and gilded.
This type of sculpture is called "Ittô-ryôson".
A similar, but smaller piece, is kept at the Musée des Arts Asiatiques Guimet in Paris and reproduced in Bernard FRANK's book, the Buddhist Pantheon in Japan -- Collection of Emile Guimet, page 78.
Very good general state of conservation. Some small losses, wear of age and restoration.
