Merovingian bronze signet ring, 6-7th century
This ring is made of a quite thin shank and a horizontally stretched hexagonal flat head. On both sides of the head, there are three globules in relief typical of merovingian jewels. These globules symbolised the three moments of sun's course (sunrise, zenith and sunset) and had an apotropaic purpose. On the head is chased a crossed out S as an abbreviation of signum, sigillum or subscriptio (meaning "seal of"), remaining letters constituting the name of ring owner, here hard to decipher.
Very good condition.
