"Bronze Sword Belt Hook With Acorn, 16th-17th Century"
A beautifully designed sword hanging hook. The acorn at the top like the fruit of the oak; for this reason, she was considered a symbol of latent strength. The belt would have passed through the folded bronze buckle and engaged an eye or hook attached to the scabbard. These appear in Dutch and British contexts. They are generally quite well made and are a nice addition to sword collections focused on this era. The best collection of original sword belt hardware can be found at the Rustkammer in Dresden. See Metropolitan Museum 2010.180.2, online and displayed in Gallery 307, for another example identified as French, 15th century (picture 6). Height: 8.5 cm.
