PITCHER with pewter shoulder, plinth foot, straight heel cup and S-shaped thumb with molded crest.
Gauging mark: three crowned lilies / BG (Most probably the Arms of the Condé?).
Height: 15.4 cm.
PARIS, First half of the 18th century.
In very good condition
These pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. They had to be checked periodically by a gauge controller appointed sometimes by the political power, sometimes by the ecclesiastical power in order to ensure "good measurement" for the consumer. If the pitcher complied with the local gauge and was in good condition, the inspector affixed his hallmark, very generally struck on the cup of the pitcher.
