The author of this composition is the famous Parian tableware maker James Wilson. His career as an artist was brief (1879-1897). He had been working since 1879 at the Etruscan Works, High Street Longton, one of the six towns of Stoke-on-Trent. In 1883, James Wilson, having built new premises in Marsh Street, transferred his Parian works, formerly located in High Street, and added porcelain manufacture to his other activities. He is known for his Parian porcelain works, including figurines and busts of famous people, such as former U.S. President James A. Garfield.
Parian" is the name used today for a form of porcelain developed in England in the early 1840s. The body of the porcelain was made to resemble marble and, when launched, it was advertised as an affordable way for people to bring smaller-scale copies of large marble statues into their homes.
