Rome was a center of excellence for still life painting throughout the 17th century, where various artists explored the beauty of everyday objects and attempted to create detailed and realistic compositions. Influenced by Caravaggism, many painters of the genre adopted a dramatic use of light and color, creating intense contrasts and suggestive atmospheres. The objects depicted often had symbolic meanings, such as a skull symbolizing mortality or the vast compositions of fruit signifying abundance and well-being.
In this work, attributed to the Baroque painter Francesco Annicini (recently rediscovered and explored in the monograph by Prof. Alberto Cottino), we find a greengrocer's stall, where however the human figure fades into the background of the composition, leaving room for a cascade of fruit that is the true protagonist of the canvas. We find apples, figs, grapes and pumpkins depicted with the typical stylistic features of Roman still life, full of contrasts and strokes of light.
