Signed Patent, Litherland & co Liverpool n°3136

Peter Litherland (1756-1804) was an English watchmaker and inventor.
He was born in Warrington and later moved to Liverpool, which was then the center of the watch trade.
He patented the rack escapement for watches, which was more precise than the commonly used verge escapement.
One of his watches is on display at the World Museum in Liverpool.
In 1791 and 1792 he took out patents for what is now known as the rack lever escapement.
Patent No. 1830 of 1791 and Patent No. 1889 of 1792 with variant of a large escape wheel of thirty inclined teeth.
Litherland died in 1804, but rack lever watches continued to be made for about 30 years by various manufacturers, including Roskell Robert.
Before 1804 Litherland was to go into partnership with Whiteside, it later became Litherland Davis & co until 1876.
