Intaglio and cameo prints. These fine stones, very preciously cut in hollow (intaglio) or in relief (cameos), were admired and coveted since Antiquity. This craze reached its peak with neoclassicism in Rome.
At the end of the 18th century, workshops like that of the Paoletti located at 49 Piazza di Spagna, produced matrices in vitreous paste based on the originals preserved in the most famous collections.
These matrices allowed them to mass produce prints in scagliola (a kind of plaster or stucco), intended for travelers, collectors, artists and other enthusiasts passing through Rome.
