LYON PAINTING - Jean Fusaro (born in 1925) "Saône jaune" 1961 - oil on canvas - format 65 x 50 cm - original frame - This painting represents a bridge over the Saône in Lyon with a barge in the foreground - Jean Fusaro was born in Marseille on June 19, 1925. His parents, art lovers, took care of his artistic education and introduced him to painting in numerous museums. They lived in Lyon, capital of Gônes, where he joined the School of Fine Arts in 1941. He stayed there for five years and met his friends André Cottavoz, Pierre Coquet, Juvin, Philibert Charrin, Truphémus, and many other “craftsmen” from the famous “School of Lyon”. With them he formed the “Sanzistas” group. This designation was imagined by Philibert Charrin to attract the attention of visitors during their exhibition at the chapel of the Lycée Ampère in 1948, as opposed, without ism, to Cubism, Fauvism, and Impressionism... Jean Fusaro worked with rigor and acquired confidence collectors and gallery owners in Lyon and Paris. In 1950, one of his works was acquired by the museum of Geneva, then of Annecy and finally, of Saint-Etienne. In 1953, Jean Fusaro received the Fénéon prize, with his friend Cottavoz, then the Marseille prize in 1957. He became a teacher at the Beaux-Arts in Lyon, his hometown, where he played an important role in the artistic community from 1969 to 1975. His students are Alain Demond, Evelyne Chevalier and Alain Barrier. His works were regularly exhibited from the 1970s. In the 1950s, he exhibited in Lyon, Galerie des Jacobins, Galerie Folklore, then in Paris Galerie Art Vivant. The Lyon artist was quickly noticed in the capital and was then invited to exhibit in England, Canada, Switzerland or the United States and permanently at the Tamenaga gallery (Japan, Paris, United States). From then on, he drew inspiration from his travels for his paintings; Sète, Venice, Rome, Istanbul… Many paintings have ports as subjects. He also paints numerous works representing Oullins, its streets, its roofs. Beyond the canvases, his painting is also displayed on the walls of the Saint-Jacques-des-Arrêts church in Beaujolais or on one of the stained glass windows of the Vourles church.
