Lovely baleen and whalebone ulu knife.

The ornate handle with red and green polychrome decorations of pastilles, foliage and geometric decorations.

The baleen blade with “WN” on one side and “NL CON ATLAS” on the other.

Dimensions: length of 11.4 cm x height of 9.5 cm.

Note: this type of ulu knife was used by Inuit women for a variety of purposes: removing and cleaning animal skins, cutting a child's hair, cutting meat and carving the blocks of ice used to build igloos.

A sailor's work inspired by Inuit art, dating from the mid-19th century.
