Academic Study of a Plaster Frieze: Grotesques, Dragons, and Birds, 1864

This drawing, created in 1864, is an academic study of a plaster cast of an ancient bas-relief. It is adorned with intricate grotesques, fantastical dragons, and delicate birds. 

Executed in charcoal on paper, the artwork features an elaborate play of chiaroscuro that creates an almost illusionistic effect. At the lower part of the frieze, two dragons interact gracefully within the composition. The complex design delicately intertwines leaves and small birds, creating a fairytale-like, medieval fusion of natural and mythological elements.

This drawing, which won a silver medal, is signed by the student Lupo Filiberto. Such signatures are rare on academic drawings, highlighting the exceptional prestige of this work. Additionally, the piece features a less legible inscription at the bottom, possibly "Nebbio," which may refer to the class or instructor at the Accademia Albertina.
