Between the modern way and full counter-reformist spirit, this pair of plates announces, in the brilliantly speckled pigmentation coloristica, the artist’s all Flemish hand. But if the general framework of the scenes and that specific and very particular tonal conception are of Flemish scope, clustering the faces and the clothes of the characters portrayed in always recognizable forms of beyond the alps, It is a must to recognize the couple also the distinctly Florentine brand. Only an artist who had gone through the modern way would have been able to ignite such warm expression of colors used. The happy solution of presenting the doctors with their backs is also a certain visit by the artist to the capital of Tuscany.
Between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the next, the Flemish guilds were able to finance several trips for their artists to Italy. A prolonged stop in the major Italian cities, innervated along prolific networks of exchange, allowed the Flemish artists to update themselves about those late fifteenth-century novelties so analyzed by modern critics.
In Florence, Flemish painting was widely spread from the beginning of the fifteenth century, thanks to close contacts with the Tuscan bankers stationed in Flanders. Italian and Flemish painting thus formed a fruitful relationship which will largely affect future generations. Let us mention in this regard the delicate linearisms of Giovanni Stradano, also Flemish (said; but already Jan Van der Straet, 1523-1605), who with his Ulysses, Mercury and Circe for the Studiolo of Francesco I of Palazzo Vecchio of Florence, It is suggestively close to the present in the general spirit; as equally decisive for our artist may have been the influence of Girolamo Macchietti (Florence, 1535-1592).
