The French painter Auguste-Alexandre Hirsch (Lyon 1833 - Paris 1911) studied at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon before entering the atelier of Hippolyte Flandrin (1809-1864) and Charles Gleyre (1806-1874). Since 1857 he has exhibited in many salons, including the Salon des Artistes Français, the Société des Artistes Français and at the Universal Exhibitions. He made portraits, genre scenes, history paintings and lithographs. In 1870 he travelled to Morocco with Antoine Lecomte, going for a time to Tangier and then settling in Tetuan. This visit inspired his mature period: his focus was thus directed on the female figure and orientalist themes. Hirsch was inspector of the teaching of drawing at the Administration de Beaux Arts in 1879 and inspector of departmental museums in 1887. Wrote the article "Practical perspective" for the Dictionary of Pedagogy and Primary Education. Like Lecomte, he portrays above all the Jewish community, particularly numerous in this city, as in the Petit Juif de Tetuan and Religious Instructions in Morocco. It does not fail to represent, however, also the Muslims, as in the works Return of the Hadjis (1880 c.), Marocchini al bagno, Ritratto di marocchino. In the canvas under consideration, the composition is very poetic and representative of the talent of the artist; young women seem to float around the typical Arab buildings that dominate the composition. The resulting image is a happy marriage between a studied landscape full of light, the painter’s brilliant portrayal intuition and academic painting, that is, between a real image and the dream. The work can therefore be traced back to the artist’s second mature period, depicting a glimpse of a city that can be identified with Tetuan. The painting is distinguished by the light that seems to come directly from the canvas: observing it, the illusion of sunlight reflected on the white walls of buildings is evident. It is also admirable the perspective expertise with which the intricate alleys typical of Arabic architecture have been made: there are more points of escape that allow the scene
